Front Line Services (FLS)
Through the "ministère de l'Immigration et des Communautés culturelles" we offer to newly arrived immigrant women and their families and provides individual services and group activities to facilitate their adaptation and integration into Quebec society. In addition to French and English, these services are also provided in many languages, such as Spanish, Arabic and Creole. Languages may vary from one year to the next according to clientele requirements.
In order to help immigrant women integrate into Quebec society and to promote their autonomy, the Centre, in collaboration with the Ministère de l'Immigration et des Communautés Culturelles, offers French courses. They are offered on a part-time basis (12 hours per week) for 11 weeks. It goes without saying that the learning of French allows these women to feel less isolated, to create new friendships with other women and to access important information, without the need for interpreters.
In the context of immigration it is often useful to accompany the newly arrived women in their search for information, particularly if the women are isolated or cannot communicate in French or English. Counsellors from the Centre guide and refer these women in the areas of their concern, such as immigration, financial security, schools for their children… They also act as interpreters in certain situations.
In a friendly and cozy atmosphere, women participate in exchange and information meetings pertaining to various topics such as:
- Parental authority;
- The Quebec school system;
- Breast cancer;
- Racial discrimination;
- The Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, etc.
These meetings focus on breaking the cycle of isolation for women and promoting their autonomy and self-confidence by informing them of their rights and available resources. They are offered year-round at no charge.
